Protect your greatest asset - your income

Naturally, none of us like to think what might happen if we were to become ill or suffer injury and so find ourselves unable to work for six months or more. However, by not considering the consequences of being out of work, we fail to prepare ourselves financially. It's important to think how you would continue to afford life's essential costs such as car loans, mortgages, food, childcare fees etc. Fortunately, Income Protection answers such concerns giving you peace of mind were such an event to take place.

What is Income Protection?

Income Protection is a form of disability/sickness insurance that enables you to take control of your financial security. By paying a monthly premium, which is determined by your occupation and health status, you will receive a regular income for the complete duration of your illness, injury or disability until such time as you return to work. Put simply, Income Protection means you can continue to afford the lifestyle you have worked hard for.

Best of all, you get to choose and tailor an Income Protection plan that suits your individual circumstances, with a range of options and cover types. What's more, as your needs and circumstances change, you can adapt your Income Protection policy to suit the changes in your life. And because there are no restrictions on the type of injury, illness or disability that an Income Protection policy covers, you get complete peace of mind.

Types of Income Protection

Individual Income Protection

Individual Income Protection is our standard plan. It is designed for those that are self-employed or for an employee who takes out the policy independently of their employer. It is a very comprehensive plan with a number of benefits.

Mortgage Income Protection

Our mortgage Income Protection plan has been designed specifically to cover the regular mortgage and loan repayments you would face if you were out of work due to an illness or disability. Mortgage Income Protection is a streamlined version of our Income Protection plan and is linked to the term of your mortgage.

WageProtector

WageProtector is designed particularly for self-employed trade-people such as electricians, tillers and gardeners. WageProtector is a cost-effective Income Protection plan that provides replacement income through its transitional cover feature for a period of up to 24 months or until you return to work. Disability cover will apply if you are unable to return to any form of work due after this period due to significant injury or illness. Only certain benefits listed in this brochure apply to this plan.

Choose a premium that suits you

Guaranteed Premiums

The guaranteed premium option will ensure that your premium does not change during the term of the plan, if your chosen benefits remain the same. This allows you to know in advance, how much your premiums will be over the term of plan. There will be no change to this benefit even if you make a claim.
OR

Reviewable Premiums

The reviewable premium option will guarantee your premiums stay constant for the first 5 years of the plan and a review will be carried out every 5 years taking into account any claims in the preceding years, economic changes and medical breakthroughs. If there are any necessary changes, you will have a choice to either increase your premium or reduce your benefits.

Level of benefit

Choose if you would like your premium and benefit to remain the same throughout the term, or to automatically increase in line with inflation, salary increases and so forth.

Indexation

You can index your income benefit by 3% each year. This feature applies before, during and after any claim you make, and ensures that as your salary increases each year, so too will your replacement income. Your premiums will also increase by 3% each year.
OR

Escalation

Choose 'Escalation' and your income benefit itself will increase by either 3% or 5% p.a. (as you select), from the anniversary of the end of the waiting period. Your premiums remain level under this option.
OR

Level

Select 'Level' and the premium and level of benefit are guaranteed to remain unchanged for the duration of the policy.

Tax Relief

You can claim for tax relief on premiums paid at your marginal rate of tax (to a maximum of 10% of total salary). If you claim, you will receive your income benefit net of income tax under PAYE.

Income Protection Plan Benefits

Customisable Benefits

Maximum Benefit

Choose how much of your income you want to protect. You can protect up to 75% of the first €82,000 of your earnings plus 33% of the balance, less social welfare benefits. This is subject to a maximum of €164,000 p.a./€3,155 per week (excluding BIK's). How much you choose to protect depends on your savings or your employer sick pay arrangement.

Deferred Period

You decide what period of time you wish to wait until you begin to receive a replacement income from your plan. Select from 3, 6 or 12 months (13, 26 or 52 weeks). For example, if they will pay you for a six month period then you may choose your waiting period as 26 weeks.

Age at which plan will end

Select the age at which your Income Protection plan will end - opt for 55, 60, or 65 years of age. The age you select could mirror your planned retirement age.

Automatic Benefits

Guaranteed Increase Option

Our unique Guaranteed Increase Option allows you to increase your income benefit by 20% of your original amount without having to provide new evidence of health. This offer will be made to you every 3 years.

Occupation Change

Our plan will continue to cover you if you change jobs, regardless of what your new job entails. If you are made redundant, your plan will continue while you are looking for another job.

Hospital Cash Benefit

Your replacement income is paid if you are in hospital for over 7 days. No waiting period applies to this payment.

Automatic Premium Protection

You will not have to pay your premiums while you are receiving an income benefit and your plan continues. Therefore if you return to work and in the future need to claim again your plan will have continued unchanged.

Rehabilitation Benefits

Many people are eager to return to work once recovered, either to their original job or to a new career. We offer assistance to help you get back into the workforce when you are ready.

Relapse Benefit

We will immediately restart paying your benefit if you have a relapse within 6 months of returning to work - there will be no waiting period in this case.

Partial Benefit

If you return to work either in your old job or a new career, whether part or full-time and your new earnings are less than previously earned you may be eligible to receive partial benefit.

Overseas Benefit

If you claim income benefit while you are outside the European Union, we will pay your income for 13 weeks in a 52 week period or 39 weeks in total. If you return to Ireland or the European Union within this time, we will continue to pay your income benefit.

Making a claim

The most important part of any Insurance Contract is the ease of making a claim. We feel that this is one of the key advantages of this Income Protection product.

Claims Visitors: Independent qualified nurses or professionals who will visit you to assist you in the completion of paperwork and the claims procedure and discuss rehabilitation options when the time is right.

Rehabilitation: Close work is done with the Irish Centre for Occupational Rehabilitation to assist you in continuing with your normal everyday activities and ultimately to allow you to return to employment.

Return to Work: This is a joint initiative with Friends First, arguably the market leaders in Income Protection and BUPA Ireland Occupational Health to assist you in getting back to work and focuses on your particular job and workplace to see if any adjustments can or should be made to assist you.

Career Change: In conjunction with Talent Fusion, you may get help in seeking a new career if you are unable to return to your original occupation.
